The insane costuming continues as Fantasy Fest announces the theme for Pretenders in Paradise 2010 as “Predators and Prey Come out to Play.” We are looking for those crazy and hungry predators and the sweet and delicious prey to join the collection of talented costumers decorated in their most outrageous gear.

Pretenders is in its 27th year and is sure to entice us all with an atmosphere of outstanding and unbelievable creations! Hosted at the Pier House Resort & Caribbean Spa, contestants will compete at amateur and professional levels for $10,000 in cash prizes amidst a full house of spectators. This Key West celebration will be presented by the Monroe County Black Heritage Preservation Foundation Monroe County Black Heritage Preservation Foundation the observance is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the 1860 African Burial Ground on Higgs Beach, Atlantic Boulevard and White Street. The evening is to include a presentation on the cemetery’s significance to international history and plans to introduce the site and its story to UNESCO for consideration as a potential World Heritage Site.

Memorial Day Weekend 2010, Key West to host the annual Yamaha Dolphin Masters Invitational

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Anglers can earn more than $13,000 in cash prizes by pursuing the acrobatic dolphin fish during the ninth annual Yamaha Dolphin Masters Invitational, scheduled Saturday, May 29, in the waters around Key West.

First-place honors and $13,125 await the angler scoring the highest total combined weight of three dolphin catches. The cash purse is based on participation by a field of 25 boats.

The second-place winner is to receive a four-night tropical fishing vacation for four, and the third-place team is to receive prizes as well.

The angling challenge is headquartered at Key West’s Historic Seaport at the Conch Republic Seafood Co., 631 Greene St. Tournament events are to kick off at 6 p.m. Friday, May 28, with a final registration, captains meeting and party.

The following morning, fishing is to begin with a Bimini start at 7 a.m. Anglers are to weigh in their dolphin at the Conch Republic Seafood docks 3:30-4:30 p.m., and an awards party is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Conch Republic Seafood.

The tournament is open to all anglers and the entry fee is $750 per boat. There is no limit on the number of boats that can register.

Key West Approves New Property Ordinances

The Key West City Commission recently passed new land use ordinances that will begin changes in the city’s Comprehensive Plan to get it updated for the current climate. According to Planning Director, Amy Kimball-Murley, “We’re chipping away at the most dysfunctional parts of the code”.

The City Commission will be establishing a new rate of growth (ROGO) ordinance for Key West properties. ROGO dictates where and what kind of development can occur based on land-use ordinances and monitors new development in Key West. The Commission has to account for all of the building permits and new allocations, keep track of deadlines for permits, and provide annual report to the entire City Commission.

The Commission has approved changes for hurricanes since Hurricane Wilma allowing for a new roof pitch, which will help with flooding, while allowing for aesthetics in neighborhoods. The commission approved rebuilding of up to 30-feet from the prior 25-foot ordinance. The new ordinance gives an extra five feet for flooding. FEMA recommends 3-5 feet above ground to account for flood mitigation.

Key West Properties Prepare for the Opening of Cuba

The Keynoter reported that last Tuesday, the board of the Tourist Development Council met to discuss marketing the Florida Keys as a tourist destination when Cuba opens up to American tourists.

The TDC is preparing a “Two Nation Vacation – Keys Plus Cuba” advertising campaign. The 10-page plan details targeting visitors to the Keys that are also “curious about Cuba” and encouraging those travelers to stay in the Keys hotels and take day trips to Cuba, fifty-five miles south.

The TDC began preparing a marketing plan for Cuba in 2002 because of the belief that Cuba “is not prepared to handle a large influx of American tourists”. One million foreigners visited Cuba in 1996 and 2.3 million foreigners visited in 2008.

It is estimated by the International Monetary Fund that, if opened today, Cuba would have more than 3 million visitors in the first year and would not enough hotel rooms to accommodate tourists. The demographics of the future Cuban visitor is being gauged as wealthy North Americans from the Eastern seaboard and Canada. The projected campaign will work with the tourist agencies of Cuba to target both North Americans and Europeans.

Key West Treasures Discovered - Treasure Hunt While Staying at Beachside

This week, a silver plate over 400 years old was discovered by divers and a wreckage crew in Key West….

Divers from Mel Fisher’s Treasures found several pieces in the ocean that apparently, are from the 1622 wreck of the Spanish ship ‘Nuestra Senora de Atocha’. The pieces, salvaged by divers and work crews, were taken aboard the Dare salvage vessel. The treasure included a second, smaller plate, a crushed silver bowl and part of a rare, decorated ceramic bowl. The large silver plate is similar to one found by Gary Randolph, the VP of Operations, in 1997 – within close proximity to the current find.

The newly discovered silver plates are thought to have been stacked with other silverware, silver bars and silver coins that have not yet been uncovered. The company has claimed that “the silver was meticulously conserved and polished by Senior Conservator john Corcoran”. Experts have predicted that there is reason to believe that there is another “significant find” amid the previous wreckage.

This weekend, the Shanna Key Irish Pub Grill showcased the talents of Tara Brannigan-Ivanova’s Irish dancing students. Brannigan-Ivanova worked closely with the owner of Shanna Key, Barry Geary, to showcase Irish heritage, history and culture. Brannigan Ivanova’s students, who range in ages from 3 to 8, performed Irish dancing to traditional Irish music for a Sunday brunch. The performance was part of Brannigan-Ivanova and Geary’s “commitment to preserving Irish culture in a foreign land”. Brannigan-Ivanova, a resident of Key West for almost 20 years, is originally from Newcastle, Ireland, a town near Belfast. The pair plans a “halfway to St. Patrick’s Day” performance in September as well…..

Beachside Key West Welcomes Anglers for Key West Fishing Tournament

The Key West Fishing Tournament (KFWT) will hold its Kick-Off Tournament this weekend, March 13th to 15th.

The weekend tournament is part of a larger 7-month fishing competition that runs from March through November 30th. The tournament is open to the general public and has divisions for Men, Women, Juniors (10-14), and Pee Wees (under 10). Competitors have their catches weighed at official tournament weigh stations to receive certificates verifying the catch and weight. At the end of the tournament, prizes are awarded.

The tournament, which was founded in 1965, promotes sport fishing participation in Key West and the release of game fish, as well as promoting
conservation and tourism.

The tournament regularly has more than 2,000 anglers participating. There are a variety of tackle classifications for 44 different species in nine different line classes from 8lb to 50lbs. Awards given out include “Outstanding Angling Achievement” and the “Sportsmanship Award”. This weekend’s Kick-Off Tournament will also provide prizes, including a $5,000 cash prize for the heaviest kingfish over 55 lbs. Beachside Key West to Follow FEMA's Direction for Hurricanes

Craig Fugate, the next director of FEMA, has taken an proactive approach in anticipation for this year’s hurricane season……

The newest FEMA director was nominated by President Obama and is encouraging the residents of the Florida Keys, and Key West in particular, to be prepared for this year’s hurricane season. His message?? Evacuate.

Fugate is no stranger to the Keys. He has served as Florida’s emergency management director since 2001, is a former Miami-Dade fire chief and is proficient in hurricane preparedness. In fact, Fugate is credited with being a leader in the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons, a heavy year for South Florida that resulted in 8 major storms.

Key West is known to be in the “Zone of West Indian cyclones”, hurricanes that tend to hit heavily between August and September. The most severe hurricanes in Key West hit in October of 1846, 1909, and 1910. The hurricanes devastated the land and destroyed ships as well as a variety of cigar shops. The 1910 hurricane, dubbed “the repeater hurricane”, defied odds by hitting the island in just one year…..

Higgs Beach Property in Key West to Get Improvements

It was announced late last week that there will be new efforts to restore Higgs Beach.

According to The Keynoter, Higgs Beach, a known hindrance in Monroe County, is getting a makeover. Although a tiny section, the beach is a significant portion of the tiny island of Key West. Higgs Beach exists within Key West city limits. In most recent years, it has become a haven for the homeless, and has made it so that the residents of Key West avoid the area.

In recent months, the beach has received increased police patrols. The measures have already reduced calls for service at Higgs Beach by two-thirds, but it hasn’t deterred the County Commission from calling for further measures. The Commission voted to increase spending by $40,000 for more Sheriff deputy patrols. The shifts result in “two, four-hour shifts that would be staggered so would-be offenders can’t rely on a pattern”.

Other clean-up efforts will include installing windows in the bathrooms, painting the pavilions and a new beach recycling program. Dent Pierce, the director of public works for Monroe County that operates the beach, has said that they will try to complete the new initiatives as soon as possible.

The Commission has also begun discussions about a grand reopening of the beach in the near future.

Conch Shell Blowing Contest Will Showcase Key West Life...

The Annual Conch Shell Blowing Contest will be held on Saturday, March 7th at 1:30 pm in the garden of he Oldest House.

In it’s 47th year, the contest celebrates the historic importance of the conch in the Keys. While islanders are used to the conch from a culinary perspective--conch meat, conch fritters, conch chowder—the conch is intertwined with the culture of Key West. The conch is a sturdy sea mollusk that has a shell that was used by the Calusa Indians for communication due to its far-reaching sound. In addition, conch shells were used by sailors as fog horns and by the early Key West people to signal salvagers that a sinking ship was spotted offshore. This is how the native Key Westers that claim themselves Conchs have made the island the Conch Republic.

The contest is sponsored by the Old Island Restoration Foundation and receives national and international coverage. The “Conch Honks” will be judged on quality, duration, loudness and the novelty of the sound produced. Conch shells will be available for purchase and the contest is for novice as well as expert conch shell blowers. Contestants may register with the Oldest House Museum as space remains available by calling (305) 294-9501. The Oldest House is located at 322 Duval Street in Key West.

Additionally, Auwina Weed, the “virtuoso of the conch shell” will perform. She will entertain contestants and onlookers as she demonstrates the art of conch shell blowing……

New Airport Finally Completed to Serve Residents and Visitors of Key West

The new Key West International Airport terminal was unveiled yesterday. The airport expansion has undergone numerous delays and costs and the expected nine month project is now completed after two and a half years…..

According to Keysnet.com, the total price tag for the airport expansion was $31.6 million. Only $25 million was budgeted for the project.

The new location replaces the 50-year old Key West International Airport facility and is twice the size of the old facility. The new 50,000 square foot facility features a larger ticket counter, new baggage facility, new TSA security equipment and computers, a new parking garage, restaurant and bathrooms.

The last flight departed Key West at 8pm on Tuesday and the first flight at the new location was at 6:20am on Wednesday. The old terminal still must be refurbished and is included in the total price of the project. It is slated for completion in early June. Initial construction on the project began in 2004.

Buffett Makes Appearance at Home in Key West - Margaritaville

Very, very cool……

Perhaps the Patron Saint of Key West, Jimmy Buffett, made one of his infamous surprise appearances at Margaritaville!!!

According to The Keynoter, the buzz started on Thursday morning when locals claiming to know the ‘Son of a Son of a Sailor’ began to chant about the possibility of Buffet making an appearance.

Buffett showed up Thursday night and hosted a free concert at the original Margaritaville on Duval Street to the delight of many Key West residents and visitors.

Buffett has apparently been “hanging out in the French West Indies and watching what’s going on up here”, the influence for his new, economic-meltdown tune entitled “We’ve Got a Lot to Drink About”, debuted for the first time on Thursday. A film crew apparently documented footage for a new video for the song.

Buffett first moved to Key West in the 70s. He lived in an apartment on Waddell Street overlooking the Atlantic. Buffett has been known to make surprise appearances at his Margaritaville restaurant, but this is his first appearance at the location since 2005……

Murphy Davis, a NY Hamptons theater director, purchased and renovated a small, 485-square foot cottage in the historic district of Key West. Davis, like many of the island’s fans, was originally attracted to the “physical environment” of Key West when he began visiting as a child on fishing trips. In time, the island became a second home.

The tiny, 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom cottage is a partnership between Davis and a college friend in real estate. The two time-share the home and fixed up the cottage with only $25,000. It still includes the original louvered windows and lush foliage. Davis renovated by re-painting and adding new wood floors.

Key West has only 25,000 permanent residents on the 4.5-mile island.

Instead, has focused on raising her children and going to school in New Jersey. McGillis formerly resided on Caroline Street in the home next to her restaurant, Kelly’s Caribbean. McGillis’ kids, now 15 and 18, have decided to move back to Key West to live with their father.

Kelly returned to host the Kelly McGillis Classic International Women’s and Girl’s Flag Football Championship in Key West, now in its 18th year. The Sarasota Herald Tribune recently profiled Key West and the Key West Literary Seminar that takes place each January.

The Literary Seminar celebrates authors like Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, and, Judy Blume and highlights their work and their love for Key West. The festival is attended by authors like Amy Tan, Gore Vidal and Margaret Atwood.

The Seminar gives writers enthusiasm for writing and offers serious literary discussion mixed with fun Key West parties. The 3-day seminar costs only $500 and has a writer’s workshop for an additional cost. Each year, the festival celebrates a different theme.

The festival will celebrate its 28th year in 2010 with the theme “Clearing the Sill of the World” which will explore 60 years of American poetry, and in 2011 the theme will be “Food as Muse”.

Country Star Chesney Only to Visit Key West

Reports surfaced late last week that country music singing sensation, Kenny Chesney, plans to sell his newly purchased Key West home.

Apparently, Chesney made the decision after reading about the sale and the exact address of the home in the Keynoter. Chesney is quoted as saying, “It’s funny how you can be moving out before you even move in. I may have been naïve to think I could just go down to the Keys and disappear, because that was the idea. I wanted to find a place where I could just be and thought I’d found it. But with all the buzz since we signed the papers, the last think I want to do to some place I love as much as Key West is change the dynamics, especially for the locals who have been so good to me, so I’m stopping the insanity before it begins. The ‘for sale’ sign is back up, and I’m just not going to be able to take possession of the house.”

The home, which is the W. Hunt Harris House at 425 Caroline Street, was built in 1898. Chesney paid $5.7 million for the 5 bedroom, 7.5 bath home that sprawls 7,000 square feet. The home has a gym, wine room, guest house and swimming pool. The new asking price for the home is $6.495 million.

Dr. James W. Porter, a coral reef scientist and Nova Southeastern University professor, is on Reef Relief’s Advisory Board and will host the reception. Dr. Porter’s personal collection of books has over 3,000 volumes that date back as early as the 17th century.

Keeping it Local - Fishing in Key West for UF scholars

Attention anglers - This weekend kicks off the 19th annual Key West Gator Club Dolphin Derby.

The tournament is being hosted at King’s Pointe Marins (5950 Peninsula Ave.), and starts at 6pm Friday, June 20th to Sunday, June 22nd with more than $30,000 in cash and prizes. This time of year is known to be the ‘height of dolphin season’ in our world-reknown, local Key West waters.

Most importantly, The proceeds from the fishing tournament go into the Gator Club’s scholarship fund, which aids local students attending the University of Florida.

Governor Charlie Crist Fishing Tournament...and Beachside!

This year, Governor Charlie Crist and Lt Governor Jeff Kottkamp hosted their 4th Annual Fishing Trip for the state GOP Friday and Saturday, May 30-31st in Key West….The tournament changes locations each year throughout the state of Florida, and this year we hosted it in Key West! Of course, Beachside was part of the event from start to finish – handling anything that needed to be done. Our dear friend, Rodney Barreto, who is the 4th term Chairman of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, wrote us the following accolade……

Yamaha Dolphin Masters Invitational This Weekend

This weekend, on May 31, 2008, Key West will host the Yamaha Dolphin Masters Invitational. 25 boats will compete for the 1st prize of $13,405 and 2nd prize of $5,345. The tournament will be headquartered out of the Conch Republic Seafood Company at 631 Greene Street.

CubanFest This Weekend!

This weekend, Cubanfest takes place on the island. From Friday to Sunday, the 23rd to 25th, we will celebrate Cuban influence in Key West.

This is the 9th year of the celebration, which was established to preserve Key West’s Cuban history. After Cuba’s war of independence from Spain in 1968, thousands of Cuban emigrants fled to freedom in Key West, causing a population surge on our tiny island. With the Cubans came cigar-making, Cuban bread, Cuban architecture, café con leche, Latin music – and of course - the roosters.

Activities for the celebration include a Coast to Coast Conga Line on Friday, followed by a Latin Dance Party, a Cigar Dinner, fishing tournaments, and food festivals. Visit the web site here for more information.

We wanted to share a link to a fellow Key West blogger, Emilie Sommer of Emilie Inc. photography. Emilie was the photographer at a recent wedding held here at Beachside Resort.

Lyndsay and Andrew, the bride and groom from Baltimore, arrived in Key West to find their scheduled venue still under construction! What a pre-wedding nightmare! Luckily for Lyndsay and Andrew, Beachside Resort was happy to help....We were able to step in and host. Other vendors for the wedding included: Blue Party Productions, Key West Cakes flowers, Mama Flowers, BBJ Linens, Venus Bridal and Robin Kaplan, harpist. The wedding was officiated by Aaron Wechter.

26th Annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration

It's that time again! The 26th annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration occurs April 18th through the 27th in Key West.

For those unfamiliar with the history, here's the story. On April 23, 1982, the Conch Republic was established as a result of the U.S. Border Patrol setting up a blockade on Hwy US 1, separating the Keys from the mainland. In true American fashion, protesting ensued with Key West Mayor Dennis Wardlow heading the charge. After appealing the blockade in Federal court and losing, Wardlow stood at Mallory Square in Key West and declared the Conch Republic an independent nation separate from the U.S. Click here for more information about the history of the Conch Republic.

The 26th festival will lack few events. Some of the different activities occurring include a conch shell blowing contest; drag race and car show; the Pirate's Ball; several parades and musical events; and the election of the Conch Republic's Royal Family. The 15th Annual Turtle Trot 5K Run/Walk starts Saturday at 8AM at Turtle Kraals Restaurant at the Lands End Marina on 231 Margaret Street.

This year, the event will be held at the West Mortello Towers, in addition to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, the traditional location.
